Have you heard of the new decluttering phenomenon that is the KonMari method? If you haven’t sat down and binged Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix, you are missing out! The show is about Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant who transforms people’s lives and homes with her organizational methods. Here are five steps on how to “spark joy” in your own home!

1. Think about organizing by category, rather than by room. For instance, take all of your clothes and dump them on the bed. This will help you visualize the amount of clothes you have and make it easier to discard pieces. Otherwise you may find that your clutter creeps from room-to-room, and you’ll never reign it in. Kondo focuses on a checklist of clothes, books, papers, Komono (miscellaneous items) and sentimental items.

2. Does this item “spark joy”? You may have heard this famous phrase already! Kondo asks that you pick up each item and ask yourself if it truly “sparks joy” in your life. If it does, you can keep it, if not, it is time to say goodbye! By actually picking up each piece of clothing or book or picture, can you truly appreciate how many things you have and whether or not you need to keep them.

3. Respect your things. A key piece of the KonMari method is paying respect to your things. Whether you say a quick thank you prayer to your home before you begin or put away your clothing in an appreciative manner instead of balling them up in a corner, saying thank you is an integral part of the process. If you have decided to discard an item, Kondo asks that you say thank you to the item in a respectful manner before putting it in your discard pile. It may seem out there, but it brings a sense of peace and reality to what you are doing while you are organizing.

4. Fold, fold, fold! The KonMari method has a specific way of folding each piece of clothing so that you can see everything you own. Instead of making piles, Kondo has you vertically filing your clothes so that they are organized but also beautiful! To keep everything even more organized, she suggests shoeboxes or other sized boxes to keep everything in order.

5. Stick to the method and stay committed! Every household is different with individual concerns and collections of things, so your process will look completely different from someone else’s. It may take you more than a month depending on how many things you have in your home, but the time spent is worth it for the end goal of total organization.

The purpose of the KonMari method is to keep meaningful items in your home that “spark joy” for you. This will make it easier to get dressed in the morning, as you will love everything in your closet, to picking out a book to read, as you kept your favorites. The chaos will be gone from your home and the minimalistic approach will make your space seem lighter, organized and beautiful!
